The Sudanese army announced the arrival of its commander, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, in Omdurman, one of the three cities of the capital, on Friday evening.

An army statement said that Al-Burhan “arrived in the city of Omdurman (…) inspecting conditions and checking on the progress of operations on the eve of the armed forces achieving major victories, after completing the implementation of the first phase.”

The army added that Al-Burhan was received by Yasser Al-Atta, a member of the Sovereignty Council, Assistant to the Commander-in-Chief and commanders of the forces in the region, who “received an enlightenment on the progress of operations and congratulated the forces on the progress they had achieved on the ground,” and published pictures of Al-Burhan inside what appears to be a residential apartment.

The army did not reveal where Al-Burhan came from, but he has been settling in Port Sudan in the east of the country for some time.

Al-Burhan’s arrival in Omdurman is linked to the army’s earlier announcement of “achieving victories” in the important city.

The army confirmed the expulsion of the Rapid Support Forces from several areas of Omdurman, and from “homes and civilian objects that were taken into military barracks.”

On the other hand, the Rapid Support Forces did not comment on the situation in Omdurman.

The war has been ongoing for 10 months between the army and the Rapid Support Forces in Sudan, while diplomatic efforts have not yet succeeded in ending the conflict.

According to the United Nations, half of Sudan’s population, about 25 million people, need humanitarian assistance and protection, while about 10 million Sudanese have been displaced inside and outside the country.
