Government officials in Peru said that the oldest person in the world is currently one of its citizens, Marcelino Abad, who is 124 years old.
The government said that Abad was born in 1900 in the Huánuco region of central Peru, and that he is older than the oldest person in the world whose age could be independently verified.
The government added in a statement: “In the peaceful embrace of nature, Marcelino Abad developed a healthy lifestyle and inner peace, which was reflected in his good health and friendly personality.”
She went on to say: “This allowed him to do so with flexibility and skill that spanned more than 12 decades, making him 124 years old on April 5th.”
Peruvian authorities say they are helping Abad apply to the Guinness Book of World Records to independently verify his age.
For his part, a spokesman for the encyclopedia said in a statement: “The encyclopedia receives many requests from individuals who claim to be the oldest living people.”
Omarabad’s verification will include official documents and other evidence to be examined by a team of experts “to prove that achievement beyond a doubt.”
The Guinness Book of World Records currently lists the oldest man alive, a 111-year-old Briton who took the title this month after the death of a 114-year-old Venezuelan man.
The oldest living woman is 117 years old, while the oldest person ever verified is 122 years old.
Abad, who was born in the small town of Chagla, lived out of sight until the Peruvian government authorities reached him in 2019, obtained an identity card for him and approved a pension for him.
A statement issued by the retirement program quoted Abad as saying that one of the secrets of his vitality is a diet rich in fruits, as well as lamb.
Abad also used to chew coca leaves, a tradition in Peruvian Andean communities.
Abad now lives in a nursing home, where a special celebration was held to mark his birthday this month.
