At the initiative of the Cinema Society, and based on its belief in the role of knowledge in civilization, and the necessity of devoting and strengthening it, the Saudi Cinema Encyclopedia is launching a program that aims to publish 100 books during its first year. Which begins in May 2024, as the Saudi Cinema Encyclopedia aims to establish a regular program for producing books in the Arabic language, with the aim of advancing the film industry from the circle of non-professional writing, to the level of professionalism and depth of specialization, so that its publications become a pillar of the infrastructure of the film industry in Saudi Arabia.

The first package of cinematic releases for this year will be launched during the period of the 10th Saudi Film Festival, between May 2nd and May 9th, 2024. Those who follow cinematic affairs will have access to 22 books written by an author and a translator, presented by a group of Saudi and Arab authors and critics specialized in cinema and its sciences.

Authored books

Among the published books that we will read this year, the Saudi academic and critic Misfer Al-Mousa presents to us a book entitled “The Naked City – The Comprehensive Reference on Investigative Documentaries,” in which he deals with the documentary film from its various aspects and presents his own vision in this rich field, and in the same context – that is, the documentary film – We read the Algerian writer and film critic Abdel Karim Al-Qadiri’s new book entitled “The Aesthetic of Reception in the Documentary Film”, and with regard to Saudi cinema, Dr. Abdullah Al-Aqibi presents to us a book entitled “The Pen Camera in Saudi Cinema” in which he explains the concept of expression with the camera and the necessity of having a theory for the Saudi film, and the film critic presents Dr. Ahmed Al-Qasimi, a deliberative semiotic reading of the films crowned with the Golden Palm of the Saudi Film Festival 2008-2023, through a book entitled “The Palm Forest, the Nighttime Hour.” On the other hand, the Bahraini critic and writer Amin Saleh presents us with two books within this collection, the first of which is a second edition of the book “The Face and the Shadow.” “In cinematic acting,” Saleh attempts to “monitor the concepts related to acting, its motives, elements, sources, techniques, effects, and transformations, in addition to its relationship with the camera, directing, script, montage, and the rest of the other artistic elements, as well as the multiple aspects related to acting.” As for the second book, it is about the aesthetics of cinema. The Saudi researcher and writer Yazid Al-Sunaid presents a book entitled “The Aesthetic in Cinema – A Brief Philosophical Study of the Natural Aesthetic.” The Syrian writer and drama developer Maher Mansour presents us with the book “The Pillars of the Plot – The Innate Foundations of Building the Plot,” in which he addresses the most important points that The narrative components make a good screenplay. In a majestic language, the Omani writer and filmmaker Abdullah Habib presents to us a book entitled “Lawrence of Arabia and the Dead – Two Cinematic Studies.” As for the author’s cinema, it had a good share in this year’s publications, whether in the explicit titles or in the contents of the books, as we read the Iraqi filmmaker’s book entitled “ Author’s Cinema – From Classical to Digital.” The Saudi academic and film director, Dr. Musab Al-Omari, presents to us a book entitled “Film Directing – Your Steps towards Directing a Film in accordance with Modern International Practices,” through which he deals in a practical manner with cinematic directing based on standard international practices. The Saudi filmmaker also opens Abdul Mohsen Al-Mutairi provides a clear window into the world of montage and its importance to the film through a book entitled “Writing with Montage.” By the Saudi poet and writer Adnan Al-Manawus, we will read a book about one of the author’s cinema icons entitled “Kim Ki-duk – The Outcast Director of Violence.” In an in-depth reading of a group of the most important international filmmakers, the Iraqi writer and film critic Mahmoud Hidayat presents to us a book entitled “The Lumiere Bible – Texts in Cinematic Thought.” We will read a book by the Syrian critic and novelist Khalil Sweileh entitled “Tell Your Dream Until I See You – The Cinema of Muhammad Malas,” in which he deals with the cinema of the Syrian director Muhammad Malas. We will also read a book by the Moroccan filmmaker Hamadi Kayroum entitled “Quotation – From the Narrative Narrator to the Film Narrator.”

Translated books

As for translation, the Syrian translator will present to us two books prepared and translated by her, the first entitled “The Psychology of Film – An Overview of Film Psychology and Its Most Important Theories” and the second entitled “Indian Cinema and Islam.” The Saudi translator Radhi Al-Namasi will also present to us “Architects of Dreams – International Dialogues in Cinema.” And about the Turkish/Kurdish filmmaker Yilmaz Guney, we will read a book translated and prepared by the Egyptian writer Ahmed Zakaria, entitled “Yilmaz Guney – The Biography of the Ugly Sultan,” and in a translation of a group of dialogues with the Greek Angelopoulos, the Egyptian translator presents to us the book “I Shoot as I Breathe – Dialogues with Theo Angelopoulos.” As for the Egyptian writer and translator Hossam Alwan, he presents a translation of the book “Irfan – Conversations with the Wind,” which talks about the life of the late Indian actor Irfan Khan.

As part of an annual tradition of the Saudi Film Festival, organized by the Cinema Society, in partnership with the King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture (Ithra), and with support from the Film Commission at the Ministry of Culture, the festival, in its tenth session held between May 2 and 9, 2024, presents a book entitled “Abdul Mohsen Al-Nimr – “The Actor’s Wings and Dreams of the Road” was prepared and edited by writers Mashael Al-Abdullah and Abeer Al-Deeb. The book deals with the journey of the artist Abdul Mohsen Al-Nimr and his most important works, in addition to a group of testimonies provided by the artist’s colleagues and companions on his path.

It should be noted that all publications this year will be published by Jusoor Al-Thaqafa Publishing and Distribution House.
