AgriHolland News: PathoSense analysis at Royal GD

From 1 February all PathoSense analyzes in the Netherlands will be carried out exclusively in the Royal GD laboratory. With just one sample, Royal GD can identify all viruses and bacteria that can affect an animal through this analysis. A handy check that provides information on which pathogens can cause health problems. This analysis is especially useful in seriously ill animals. The analysis result clearly reflects what is happening in the animal at the exact moment of sampling.

Using a new patented swab, the veterinarian can easily collect samples at the farm where acute health problems are occurring. Various types of specimens are suitable for PathoSense analysis, such as a nasal swab from the upper airway, lung lavages from the deeper airways, a rectal swab, or a swab of intestinal contents, from affected tissue, or from an aborted fetus or serum.

The veterinarian does not have to select in advance which pathogens should be tested for. All viruses and bacteria are detected. PathoSense uses sequencing with Oxford Nanopore Technologies for this purpose. This technology allows for broad real-time identification of viruses and bacteria in critically ill animals. PathoSense analysis can be used for all animal species.

The kit with the patented PathoSense swab will be available from February 1st via the GD Webshop. Packages containing samples can be sent to GD via PS Night Distribution. The analysis is recorded via the PathoSense app. The status of the analysis can be followed in the app. The exam results also appear in the app. GD guides the veterinarians with a brief explanation of the results.

PathoSense was founded in October 2020 by Dr. Sebastiaan Theuns and Prof. Dr. Hans Nauwynck as a spin-off of Ghent University. PathoSense offers a platform from sample collection to diagnostic interpretation of infectious diseases in veterinary medicine via nanopore sequencing.
