A town in Myanmar called Kowloon has been almost completely burnt down by the ruling junta after it was retaken from rebel groups. Junta forces recaptured the city a couple of weeks ago. Later they burnt about 80 percent of the city.
According to a report by the Myanmar media Irrawaddy, the town of Kowloon in Myanmar’s northwestern Sagaing region fell to the junta on November 6 last year. A fierce battle ensued between the People’s Defense Force (PDF) and the Junta forces to recapture it. On the 12th of this month, the junta forces recaptured the city.

A member of the PDF force deployed in Kaolin town told the Irrawaddy that there are eight wards in Kaolin city. After the occupation, the junta forces also set fire to every ward. They also attacked at least 10 villages outside the main city.
A photo taken from a drone showed almost all the houses in the town of Kowloon burnt down. Since recapturing the city, the junta forces have taken control of key buildings and institutions. Besides, they have set fire to all the structures that hinder surveillance. About 25 thousand people live in Kaolin. All of them have been displaced by the conflict between the two sides.
When Myanmar’s junta overthrew the country’s elected government and seized power in February 2021, China called it a “major cabinet reshuffle”. Then when bloody unrest spread across the Southeast Asian country, civil war broke out.
