Bangladesh, India and the whole of South Asia are burning in intense heat. At some places, the temperature rises to 40 to 45 degrees Celsius. People’s life has been disturbed in such weather. People are counting days hoping for a drop of rain. Hopefully, the much expected rain may appear within a few days. But there is also bad news!

There is a risk of heavy rains in most parts of South Asia during the upcoming monsoon season this year. That is, the people of this region are going to be affected by the excessive rain after the terrible heat. The South Asian Climate Outlook Forum (SACOF) reported this fear in a report last Tuesday (April 30).

The agency said the 2024 southwest monsoon season (June-September) is likely to see above-normal rainfall in most parts of South Asia. However, some areas of North, East and North-East regions may receive less than normal rainfall.

Large parts of South Asia are likely to experience abnormal rainfall this monsoon season, mainly due to the La Nina weather pattern, said ASOCF.

A southward flow of warm ocean currents can be observed in some years along the Peru-Ecuador coast of the eastern Pacific Ocean. This is called El Nino. Its opposite is called La Niña. As El Nino causes excessive temperature and drought in South and Southeast Asia, La Nina causes danger of heavy rains.

According to SACOF, moderate El Nino conditions are prevailing at present. Enso (El Nino-Southern Oscillation) is expected to remain neutral during the first half of the monsoon season. However, in the second half of the season, La Nina effects may occur.

India Meteorological Department (IMD) senior scientist DS Pai told news agency PTI that La Nina is the opposite of El Nino. This is one of the main reasons for ‘above normal’ rainfall during the monsoon season.
