Tripoli: «Middle East»
The National Safety Authority in the Libyan capital announced on Monday the control of a “huge fire” that broke out late on Sunday evening in warehouses belonging to the General Electricity Company in the Karimiya area, south of Tripoli.
Osama Ali, spokesman for the Ambulance and Emergency Service, told Asharq Al-Awsat that 3 members of the Civil Defense were slightly injured, and 9 others suffered from suffocation as a result of smoke from the fires, in addition to only two members of the ambulance service.
The ambulance service announced earlier the evacuation of the entire area near the fire site, for fear of the scattering of shrapnel and the spread of the fire to homes, while a spokesman for the Emergency Medicine and Support Center confirmed that a number of members of the National Safety Authority were slightly injured while evacuating families in the vicinity of the place.
While local media revealed that the incident coincided with the start of inventorying the contents of the warehouses 4 days ago, the local municipal council held the “National Unity” government and the competent authorities responsible for what happened.
The head of the electricity company, Muhammad Al-Mashai, also asked the Public Prosecutor to assign prosecutors to investigate the causes of the fire, determine whether it was intentional, and determine responsibility for that.
A statement by the “Unity” government quoted Wiam Al-Tayeb, the company’s spokesman, sending an official letter to the Attorney General to open an investigation, indicating that the materials that caught fire in the yard of the Electrical Works Company in Karimiya are materials contracted for the benefit of the company and relate to electrical projects. He denied recording any registration. Victims due to intense fire.
On the other hand, the “stability” government headed by Osama Hammad also demanded the opening of an expanded investigation to find out the causes of the fire, and the assistance of accredited judicial experts. It also announced that it would harness all available capabilities to control the situation.
