Scientists from Jinan University have found that theabrovin from black tea can increase insulin sensitivity.

Publika.az reports that the results of the research were published in “Nutrients” magazine.

It was noted that diabetes is a serious public health problem. According to the International Diabetes Federation, there will be more than 592 million cases of diabetes by 2035. “Type 2 diabetes mellitus” (T2DM) is an increasingly common metabolic disease often associated with cellular resistance (decreased sensitivity) to insulin. This condition results in impaired glucose uptake by cells.

Theabrovnin, a bioactive component of Chinese dark tea, has previously been shown to improve skeletal muscle insulin sensitivity and lower fasting blood glucose levels, as well as promote the growth of beneficial gut bacteria.

In the new study, scientists conducted experiments on cells. They confirmed that theabrovin is not toxic to cells, including at high concentrations.

Treatment with theabrovnin reduces the level of cell-damaging reactive oxygen species in the mitochondria, which are responsible for the production of cellular energy. This has led to a reduction in oxidative stress in the cells. In addition, theabrovin slowed down the activity of the HMGCR molecule involved in cholesterol synthesis.

Theabrovnin, isolated from tea with any degree of fermentation, caused an increase in the absorption and processing of glucose by cells. However, theabrovnin obtained from the long fermentation tea (14 days) was more effective than the short fermentation tea (7 days).
