BUEY ARRIBA, Granma – Among the green and lush mountains of Cuba is Buey Arriba, a municipality located in the eastern province of Granma.
When the Spanish colonizers settled in this area, they found a peaceful mountain river with crystal-clear waters, but strong floods in rainy weather occurred suddenly, causing many floods and disasters. The phenomenon was compared to the strength of an ox, hence the name of the town.
Buey Arriba has a territorial area of 453.9 square kilometers and a population of 32,594 inhabitants distributed across several towns and rural communities in the plains and mountains.
It is located in the large Sierra Maestra national park with very peculiar vegetation and fauna. This park houses, cares for, conserves and protects the national attributes in its beautiful mountain landscapes: the royal palm, the tocororo and the national flower, the butterfly.
It has a predominantly mountainous relief, where the Hombritos and Batallas peaks stand out, with 1,722 meters and 1,557 meters respectively above sea level. Likewise, it has numerous streams and rivers where the basins of the Hicotea River and the Buey River stand out.
