As a result of union protests at bpost, about a third of post offices were closed in Brussels and Wallonia on Thursday. This is what spokeswoman Veerle Van Mierlo says. In Flanders the impact is limited: only five offices in the Antwerp region remained closed.

Bpost was able to carry out almost all newspaper rounds on Thursday morning, it said. In Flanders and Wallonia, postal delivery is also running smoothly, with 90 percent of the staff at work. In Brussels the impact on postal delivery is greater, with more than 70 percent of the staff at work.

According to Van Mierlo, there are also “some strikers here and there” in the sorting centers and the protest action may also have an impact there on Thursday evening. “We are doing everything we can to limit the inconvenience,” she emphasizes.

The unions are taking action on Thursday afternoon at the bpost headquarters in Brussels to demand clarity about the future of the postal company now that the newspaper contract has not been awarded and there is not yet clarity about the support mechanism for delivery in sparsely populated areas.
