A five-storey building under construction collapsed in South Africa, killing 3. At least 53 others were trapped under the rubble. An operation is underway to rescue them. A group of 75 construction workers were present when the building collapsed on Monday (May 6). The British media reported the news.
The horrific incident took place on Monday afternoon local time in George town on the east coast of Western Cape Town.
Eyewitness local councilor Theresa Jay said she suddenly heard a noise. And just then the entire building collapsed, tumbling to the ground. Dust started flying around.
In a statement on Tuesday, the municipal authorities of the city said that 22 people were rescued from the rubble and taken to the hospital.
Rescue workers, police and people were seen rushing to the town, 450 kilometers east of Cape Town, to search for survivors. The cause of the accident is being investigated.
Western Cape Premier Alan Wind said 75 construction workers were confirmed to be on site at the time of the incident. Officials were able to establish contact with some of the trapped people. Heavy lifting equipment and sniffer dogs have been brought in to assist in the rescue operation.
