A project to raise Qatari gas production to 142 million tons annually

Qatar announced plans to implement a new liquefied natural gas expansion project in the North West Field, the largest natural gas field in the world.

Qatar Energy Company stated that the “Northwest Field” project will raise Qatar’s production capacity of liquefied natural gas to 142 million tons annually before the end of this decade.

The CEO of Qatar Energy and Minister of State for Energy Affairs, Saad Al-Kaabi, said: The new expansion, which will be called the “North West Field Project,” will add an additional 16 million tons of liquefied natural gas to the existing expansion plans, adding that the total expansion will increase the volume of production. The current rate is about 85 percent.

Al-Kaabi added: Recent studies have shown that the North Field contains a huge additional amount of gas estimated at about 240 trillion cubic feet, which raises the gas reserves in the State of Qatar from 1,760 to 2,000 trillion cubic feet.

He explained that these data will enable us to begin developing a new project to produce liquefied natural gas in the western sector of the “North Field”, with a production capacity of about 16 million tons annually, stressing that Qatar Energy “will begin immediately” implementing the basic engineering work necessary to ensure the completion of the expansion in Announced time.

According to Qatari media, the “North Field” expansion project extends under the waters of the Gulf to Iranian territory, and includes about 10 percent of the known natural gas reserves in the world, according to estimates by the “Qatar Energy” Company.

It is noteworthy that Qatar is one of the largest producers of liquefied natural gas in the world, along with the United States, Russia and Australia. The Asian countries, led by China, Japan and South Korea, are the main market for Qatari gas, and it is also receiving increasing demand from European countries.
