Currently, in Russia, eggs are considered a luxury product, for which Russians are ready to stand in long queues and travel many kilometers. In some regions of the country, sales restrictions have been introduced: a person can only buy 12 eggs at a time.

According to euronews.com, a dozen eggs currently costs around 140 rubles, or around PLN 5.2. A year ago the price was half that. “I’m shocked! It’s terrible what’s happening to prices. It’s not just eggs, but everything,” a 76-year-old Moscow resident told AFP in an interview.

The problem of rising chicken egg prices is so serious in Russia that it was among the topics Vladimir Putin discussed during a recent televised conference summarizing the country’s past year. The President of the Russian Federation assured that he was aware of the case and ordered its rapid resolution.

The Russian Ministry of Agriculture has already authorized the duty-free import of up to 1.2 billion chicken eggs, including: from Turkey, Azerbaijan and Belarus. They can be imported into Russia only until June 30th. At the same time, the Prosecutor General of Russia, Igor Krasnov, ordered the opening of an investigation into the reasons for the drastic increase in egg prices.

According to Russian media, the increase in the price of eggs is caused by the increase in the price of poultry feed, a consequence of sanctions imposed by the West on Russia due to the invasion of Ukraine which has been ongoing since February 2022.
