Chinese scientists have introduced a new method of suppressing cancer cells.

To do this, they tested a small flexible battery with zinc electrodes on laboratory mice. These batteries wrap around the tumor and absorb oxygen from the environment of the cancer cells.
In mice that underwent the experimental procedure in addition to conventional treatment, 90% of the cancer cells died within two weeks.
But at the same time, in some cases, cancer cells can simply be hypoxic, that is, they develop at a low oxygen level. These include certain types of breast cancer. They grow so fast that the blood supply cannot keep up with their growth. Therefore, the core of such tumors may exist at lower oxygen levels than their outer layers.
Enjiao Xia, a materials scientist at Fudan University in Shanghai, notes that reduced oxygen levels can have a double-edged effect. He notes that in this case, some of the cancer cells may survive, but the immune cells designed to destroy them may die.
