MIAMI, United States. – Cuban visual artist Kadir López recently inaugurated his new exhibition “Illuminatio” in Havana. The exhibition, his first on the Island since 2019, focuses on the innovative use of neon, a material that López has explored and redefined throughout his career.

“Illuminatio” is made up of 14 installation works that explore the capabilities of neon not only as a source of light, but as a medium to transmit messages of well-being, freedom and progress. “Neon is a more exclusive art that has been done relatively in the same way, but the use in this exhibition stands out for the three-dimensional works since you can look at it from many places in the same space,” López explained in an interview with the agency. EFE.

The exhibition, curated by Lisset Alonso, aims to “achieve a fairly open image of what light can be in various dimensions,” according to López.

Among the outstanding works are ADNwhich represents the evolution of man, and Rainbow, a work related to tolerance and diversity. López also mentioned a series that he considers especially significant and that includes the signatures of historical figures such as Martin Luther King, who “in some way have illuminated the existence of man,” he said.

The artist said that the choice to begin this new stage of his career in Havana was very intentional: “The idea was always to start in Havana because the light begins in the place where you are, the place where you belong where you have had your dreams.” estate”.

To date, López, born in Las Tunas in 1972, has exhibited in multiple cities around the world, including New York, West Palm Beach, Los Angeles, Washington DC, and Hong Kong, in addition to participating in group exhibitions in Switzerland, Mexico , Colombia, Peru, South Korea, Panama, Barbados and Spain.

López’s proposal establishes a precedent in the use of neon in contemporary art, moving it away from its traditional association with advertising and recontextualizing it as a powerful expressive and reflective medium.

The exhibition will be open to the public for a limited time at the Artis 718 Gallery, in Havana.
