Belgrade exploded with protests – the police went on the offensive

In the capital of Serbia, Belgrade, on the evening of June 28, riots flashed again. Thousands of people took to the streets for the next anti -government rally, demanding the resignation of President Alexander Vucic and his team, as well as the holding of early elections, Liter.kz reports with reference to news.

The rally went peacefully: the protesters walked along the streets with posters and chanted slogans. But by night the situation was heated.

“In the city center, the demonstrators tried to break through the police cordons. In response, the security forces used light -school grenades and pepper gas. Stones and clubs were used on both sides. The police reported dozens of detainees. There were also victims of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, six police officers and at least two protests were wounded,” the publication writes.

The head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs Ivitsa Dachich sharply condemned violence and promised that law enforcement officers “would do everything possible to restore order”.

Note that protests in Serbia have been going on almost daily since the end of last year. Then, in November, a canopy collapsed at one of the railway stations, 16 people were killed. People accused the authorities of negligence, corruption and complete incompetence. Since then, the protest movement has only gained strength, it has been led by students, public activists and opposition politicians.

President Vuchich, who has been in power for almost 12 years, is still refusing to make concessions. He stated that the elections would be held, as planned, not earlier than 2026. Moreover, he accused some “external forces” of that they allegedly incite young people to the riots.
