Abdala vaccine shows success in Chihuahua
Recent data shows that the application of almost 37,000 doses of the Abdala vaccine in Chihuahua has proved successful in terms of safety, efficacy and quality of the biological vaccine that was developed in Cuba for booster coverage and first doses. This is despite absurd disinformation campaigns that have been trying to affect families in Chihuahua by dissuading them from getting vaccinated. The vaccine arrived in the state in December and is currently being administered in 237 medical units in 65 municipalities.
High vaccination percentage doesn’t mean the virus is gone
Although 94 percent of the Chihuahua population is already vaccinated against Covid-19, it is important to note that this does not mean that the virus has disappeared. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), although the public health emergency that began on 30th January 2020 has ceased to exist, the virus is still present and can be dangerous.
A history of excellence
Abdala was developed by the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (CIGB) of Cuba, an institution that has been nationally and internationally recognized for its work in the field of genetic engineering and biotechnology since 1986. It is also one of the two in the world that has conducted studies on the population and not just in laboratories.
A new take on vaccination strategy
The application of the Abdala vaccine in Chihuahua has taken a different approach outside of the massive concentrations that the health emergency demanded at the time. Over 36,791 doses have been applied, of which 4,114 were administered as first doses, 1,630 as second doses and 31,227 as boosters. Ciudad Juarez has seen 41% of the Abdala vaccine applied in the entity, with 15,477 doses. Approximately 1,382 were given as the first dose, 549 as the second, and 13,546 as reinforcements. In Chihuahua, the operation for adults continues in 237 health units. Three belong to IMSS-Bienestar, 23 to IMSS, 14 to ISSSTE, one to the Military Hospital of the Ministry of National Defense, and 196 belong to SSA.
Recognition for healthcare workers and population
It is worth giving recognition to the “Roadrunner Brigade” made up of the Secretary of National Defense, IMSS, IMSS-Welfare, ISSSTE, Secretary of Well-being and Secretary of State Health, in charge of managing the pandemic, as well as the Chihuahuan population that has been participatory in the innumerable vaccination campaigns, positioning the state in the top vaccination spots. The level of confidence is reflected in the favorable opinion recently issued by the New Molecules Committee of the Federal Commission for Protection against Sanitary Risks, as part of the process to obtain authorization for emergency use issued by the Commission for COFEPRIS Sanitary Authorization to expand its use in boys and girls from 5 years of age.
The future of self-produced vaccines and transformation
It is predicted that Cuba’s ability to develop self-produced vaccines against Covid-19 and immunize its citizens can serve as a model for developing countries [1]. This is especially relevant for countries such as Mexico that aim to achieve transformation with self-sufficiency. It is hoped that the success of the Abdala vaccine in Chihuahua can be a motivator for other regions seeking to follow suit and protect their citizens.
