A delegation from the village of Snettisham in the Norfolk region of England visited its sister village, Küçükanafarta village in the Eceabat district of Çanakkale.
A delegation of 9 English people came to Küçükanafarta within the scope of sister village relations carried out by the Gelibolu Association and the Gallipoli Dardanelles International Association in England. In the welcoming ceremony, after laying flowers at the Atatürk Monument, a moment of silence was observed and the national anthems of the two countries were sung.
Village Headman Engin Çınar and his wife Mücella Çınar presented flowers and handcrafted gifts to the British guests.
In his speech at the ceremony, Muhtar Çınar touched upon the friendship between the two villages and said, “I think today is a very important day. Last year, the mayor of a small village from Turkey, the Gallipoli Peninsula, going to England, Norfolk as a guest of a small village was a big step in terms of friendship and mutual understanding that humanity needs the most today. Today, it is just as valuable to host our valuable guests who reciprocated that step. I would like to thank our valuable guests who came here today.”
Çınar thanked John Crowe, President of the Gallipoli Dardanelles International Association, who has been working for over 10 years to develop friendships between the peoples of the countries that fought in Gallipoli 108 years ago, to commemorate the fallen soldiers and to educate the younger generations about the meaning of war and the value of peace, and said, “I sincerely hope that these steps will continue and that this bridge of friendship between the villages of Küçükanafarta and Snettisham will make a small contribution to world peace.”
After the ceremony, the British guests were served refreshments by the village people.
