In Uganda, a 70-year-old local resident gave birth to twins following an in vitro fertilization procedure.
Safina Namukwaya managed to get pregnant through an ‘in vitro’ fertilization (IVF) procedure and gave birth to a boy and a girl on November 29 at the Kampala Reproductive Health Centre, BBC reports with reference to a hospital in Uganda.
The medical institution declared that both the mother and the babies are well and noted that the birth of twins to a 70-year-old woman is not only a medical success, but also “a story of the strength and resilience of the human spirit.”
For her part, Namukwaya, who is one of the oldest women to become a mother, told local media that it was a “miracle.” She stated that her pregnancy was not easy for her, in part, due to the separation of her partner, who left her after finding out that she was expecting more than one child.
Three years ago, in 2020, Safina Namukwaya gave birth to a baby girl. As she expressed it, she wanted to have children because they made fun of her for not having them and, furthermore, she did not want to be alone in her old age.
