37 people have died in India due to toxic alcohol consumption. At least 55 people have fallen seriously ill in Kallakurichi district, 250 km from Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu state, over the past few days after consuming toxic alcohol. They have been admitted to hospital. This information was given in a report of Indian media NDTV.
Most of the alcohol-related illnesses and deaths are from the Karunapuram area. A woman said that her son died due to toxic alcohol. She said her son was suffering from severe stomach pain and could not open his eyes. He could not even be admitted to the hospital due to alcoholism.
Another mother said that her son had severe stomach pain. He can neither see nor hear anything. He said that this should not happen to anyone. The sale of such poisonous liquor should be stopped.
The police have so far arrested three people in this incident. Meanwhile, Kallakurichi Deputy Commissioner MS Prashant said on Thursday that the condition of some of the sick is critical.
He said that adequate medical personnel including experts from nearby government medical colleges have been deployed in the district to deal with the situation. Additional ambulances with life-support systems have also been deployed. He also said that an investigation has been ordered into the death due to consumption of poisonous liquor.
Due to this incident, the state government has taken strict action. The Deputy Commissioner of Kallakurchi has been transferred on charges of negligence and failure to prevent the death and illness of so many people at once due to consumption of poisonous liquor. Besides, several officers including the District Superintendent of Police have been dismissed.
In a statement, the state government said samples from packets of desi liquor consumed by 26 people were sent for forensic report and presence of toxic methanol was found.
Chief Minister MK Stalin expressed his condolences to the victims. He said, I am shocked and saddened by the death of poisoned liquor in Kallakuri. Action has been taken against the accused in this incident. They have been arrested.
Earlier last year, at least 27 people died after consuming poisoned liquor in Chengalpattu and Villupuram in Tamil Nadu. At that time, several reports indicated that there was a booming business of illegal liquor sales in that state of South India. It was then alleged that Chief Minister MK Stalin’s government did not take necessary steps.
