At least 12 people, including 4 policemen, were injured in a three-way clash between supporters of 2 upazila chairman candidates and the police in Sujanagar, Pabna. 2 of the injured were shot. Police arrested 3 people from the spot along with indigenous weapons.
The incident took place on Thursday (May 2) at around 7:30 pm in Kalirmor area of Bhayana Union of Sujanagar Upazila.
The injured in the clash are Badsha Pramanik (40), Matin Sheikh (50) and Abdul Awal (35) of Bhayana Union. Their condition is serious. Besides, 4 policemen including Sujanagar Police Station Sub-Inspector Mansoor were injured.
Talking to the police and activists, it is known that for a long time there has been a political conflict and conflict between the former mayor of Sujanagar and the president of Upazila Awami League Abdur Ohab and the general secretary of Upazila Awami League and the current upazila chairman Shahinuzzaman Shaheen. Both Wahab and Shaheen chairman are candidates in this upazila election.
On Thursday evening, supporters of Shahinuzzaman Shahin and supporters of Amin Chairman of Abdul Wahab Group first chased each other and then fiercely clashed in Kalirmor area of Bhayana on Thursday evening. After receiving the news, the police went to the spot to calm down the situation and the supporters of Shahinuzzaman Shahin clashed with the police. 12 people including the police were injured.
Amin Uddin, Chairman of Bhayana Union, said, Shahinuzzaman Shahin’s people attacked my house. My house has been vandalized. Later the police came and prevented them.
Sujanagar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Jalal Uddin said, Shaheen’s people attacked the police when Amin got the news of the attack on the chairman’s house. We fired blanks to bring the situation under control. 3 people have been arrested from the spot with indigenous weapons.
On the other hand, the chairman candidate Shahinuzzaman Shahin blamed Amin Chairman for the attack and said that one of my supporters named Abdul Majeed was beaten up under the leadership of Amin Chairman. This is the excitement. Later, under the leadership of Amin Chairman, my people were fired upon. Some of my supporters were shot and injured. They have been admitted to hospital.
Chairman candidate Abdul Wahab complained that rival chairman candidate Shaheen’s people are attacking my people in the entire upazila. threatening in various ways. Today’s incident is part of that. They don’t obey the police either.
In this regard, Pabna Additional Superintendent of Police Masud Alam said that the police went there when the chairman candidate Shaheen’s people surrounded the Bhayana UP chairman’s house due to commotion over the election campaign. But the attack on the police is sad. Police fired blanks to maintain law and order. Additional police have been deployed in the area. The situation is now normal.
