14 fishermen arrested for fishing in prohibited nets in Chandpur – 2024-05-13 03:15:11

Naval police arrested 14 fishermen for fishing with prohibited nets in Meghna river in Chandpur. Of these, 12 were booked under the Fisheries Act and two were released on bail as they were minors.

On Saturday (May 11) afternoon, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Chandpur Naval Police confirmed this information. Kamruzzaman.

The arrested are, Chandu Bhuiyan (25), Suruj Bhuiyan, (28), Iqbal Bhuiyan (19), Yashin Chayal (22), Md. Ibrahim Khalil (20), Jalil Sikder (60), Shahjahan Khan (62), Noor Islam Kabiraj (38), Mohan Howladar (27), Farooq Mia (23), Mannan Khan (65), Ramzan Sheikh (25), Zaheer Kaviraj (13) and Riyad (13). The houses of these fishermen are in various villages of Ibrahimpur and Chandra Union of Chandpur Sadar Upazila.

OC Kamruzzaman said that around 8:30 AM, Sub-Inspector (SI) of Police Station Sajjad Hossain arrested these fishermen while fishing with prohibited current nets at a place called Mini Cox’s Bazar in Rajarajeshwar Union of Upazila. At that time, two thousand 200 meters of prohibited curent nets and three fishing wooden boats were seized with the fishermen.

He also said that two regular cases have been filed under the Fisheries Act against 12 of the arrested fishermen. They were handed over to the court. The remaining two were released on bond to their guardians as they were minors. The seized nets were destroyed by fire and the boats are in police custody as evidence in the case.
