Anwar Zenati, Professor of Islamic History and Civilization at Ain Shams University in Cairo, said that “Zionism” is an Orientalist creation, and that Israeli Orientalism came in the service of the principles of understanding Judaism, which contains texts that command genocide, while continuing to understand the environment and defend visions, including claims that the Qur’an was stolen from the Torah.
This came in an interview with the media figure Yassin Adnan on the program “In Orientalism” on the “Community” platform, in which Zanati mentioned that the Orientalist work, which he presented examples of in Palestine before its occupation in 1948, “was very organized by a group of senior officers, Orientalists, and Orientalist politicians, with the aim of understanding the Levant region, through monitoring, reports, and research, for the sake of the Zionist establishment, to understand food, clothing, how to move, topography, geology, and various aspects of life in the region.”
He added: “Orientalism is a system that serves some of itself, in the interest of Zionism, and there was agreement in European Orientalist thought; because Orientalism based on Judaism was intelligent, with a step-by-step policy. At the time of the rejection of Jews in Europe, it did not call itself Jewish Orientalism, but rather researchers who believed in Judaism entered Orientalism as Europeans, and served Zionism (…)
Then, after the establishment of the Israeli state, this Orientalism began to express its Jewishness and that it was Israeli, while before that (…) the trinity of evangelism, colonialism, and Zionism met, because Judaism does not think about spreading its religion, and does not regret Christian evangelism.”
“My study of history has shown me that Orientalism is an integrated whole, with goals, mechanisms, universities, annual conferences, and magazines that serve results. It is a continuous wheel, producing at a pace that may even be monthly,” the historian said, giving current examples: “In 2023, at the Hebrew University, eight studies serving Orientalism were published, concerned with translations of the Holy Quran, about a very dangerous translation of the Holy Quran.”
After listing examples of media campaigns, translations, and studies, the speaker explained that the difference in the way the Arab-Islamic world and the European-American world that supports Zionism deal with this is that “they are organized, they translate, and they prepare studies, through organized collective work with backgrounds. Our problem is that we are naive, we cannot crystallize, and there is no work for institutions to monitor the work of orientalists, translate it, analyze it, and study it, except through individual efforts.”
He continued: “Israeli Orientalism came after the formation of the occupying Israeli entity, and after owning the land they usurped, and on which they established their universities and research bodies, and in which they spread their Orientalist ideas, to serve Jewish thought and excavate antiquities.” Among his productions, whose names he listed and the defenders of their ideas, is that “the Qur’an is stolen with biblical and evangelical influences,” ignoring the difference in the eloquence of the Qur’anic text, and its complete distance from the pornography of “Song of Songs,” for example, and the stories of treachery, deception, fornication of the prophets, and the struggle with God mentioned in the Torah, and a great difference in the details of the Qur’anic stories, and that the principle that the Qur’an states explicitly is that God revealed it to His Messenger, confirming what came before it and dominating it.
Regarding the “idea of genocide,” the academic mentioned that it is “rooted” in Jewish religious sources, then he read a text from the texts justifying genocide in the Torah, which reads: “When you approach a city to fight against it, offer it peace. If it accepts peace and opens to you, then all the people who are in it shall be yours for forced labor and shall serve you. But if it does not make peace with you, but makes war against you, then you shall besiege it. And when the Lord your God delivers it into your hand, you shall strike down all the males in it with the edge of the sword. But the women, the children, the livestock, and all that is in the city, all its spoil, you shall take for yourself. And you shall eat the spoil of your enemies which the Lord your God has given you (…) But as for the cities of these peoples which the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance, do not leave alive a soul.”
Zenati explained that although the Torah considers Palestine a foreign land for the Jews, and its text states that the Prophet Abraham “settled” in the land of the Palestinians, and that the Prophet Jacob lived “in the land of his father’s foreign land in Canaan,” there is “a passion for deception,” then he added, “The Torah says that Palestine is a foreign land for the Jews (…) and throughout the extended Palestinian history, the maximum degree of Jewish living as a group in a limited area is 250 years compared to the thousands of years of its age,” but what they have is not the strength of argument or history, but rather “the strength of America and Europe, which benefits them in falsification, and accusations of ‘anti-Semitism’ for those who respond to the errors (…) and unfortunately continuing to falsify does not repel with the required force, while Israeli archaeological research for decades only proves the existence of the Canaanites,” then he concluded his intervention by saying, “The beginning of our hope is when we work as a system.”
