The film “Challengers,” about tennis fans embroiled in a romantic drama, was the highest-grossing film this weekend in the United States, grossing $15 million, according to industry estimates released Sunday.
Zendaya and her castmates Mike Faist and Josh O’Connor have been on a press tour to promote the film by Italian director Luca Guadagnino, which opened in 3,477 theaters in the United States and Canada.
Reviews have been mostly positive for the film: it has an 88% on Rotten Tomatoes and a B+ CinemaScore rating. The audience was 58% women and 41% people between 18 and 24 years of age.
In second place was the religious film “Unsung Hero” by grossing $7.8 million in 2,832 theaters. It is based on the true story of the Smallbone family and the rise of children in the world of country music. Joel Smallbone directed the film, co-wrote it, and plays David’s father.
The Lionsgate film, which cost only $6 million to produce, earned a very rare A+ rating on CinemaScore and has a 100% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics, however, are more skeptical and gave it a 58%. The audience was mostly female (69%) and over 25 years old (91%).
