The hospital said today that after removing the blood clot and performing an angioplasty of the arteries, blood flow was restored and the so-called reperfusion syndrome developed, which is manifested by swelling of the limb.
“This condition was treated with fasciotomies during the first operation. It involves cutting the coverings of the muscles, leaving the incisions until the swelling subsides.” the spokeswoman said. According to her, these incisions must be treated carefully and regularly before they can be closed again. The length of hospitalization will depend, among other things, on how the wounds will heal.
“Mr. Miloš Zeman is conscious, oriented, and cooperating with the start of rehabilitation. Due to the above-mentioned current course, the length of hospitalization cannot be predicted,” the hospital stated. He will provide more information on Wednesday.
Seventy-nine-year-old Zeman’s leg was not bleeding due to a blood clot, he is in the intensive care unit of the Cardiovascular Surgery Clinic. After the operation, even over the weekend, according to hospital spokesperson Pavlína Danková, he was in a serious but stable condition.
Motolská hospital in Friday stated that it is not yet possible to determine how long Zeman will remain in the hospital. Today, the council was supposed to evaluate Zeman’s current condition and decide on the next course of treatment.
The members of the eight-member medical council of the Motol hospital are the deputies for medical and preventive care Lucie Valentová Bartáková, head of the clinic of cardiovascular surgery Štěpán Černý and head of the clinic Radovan Fiala, head of the clinic of imaging methods Miloslav Roček, head of the Internal Clinic Radan Keil and head of the clinic Jindra Lochmanová, head of the clinic of rehabilitation and physical education Pavel Kolář and head doctor of the clinic of anesthesiology, resuscitation and intensive medicine František Mošna.
Zeman arrived at the Motol hospital for an examination on Thursday. Zeman’s spokesman Jiří Ovčáček he stated at the time that the resulting health problems were also related to diabetes, which the former head of state suffers from for a long time. Doctors operated on Zeman the same day. In a so-called hybrid operation, interventional radiologists and vascular surgeons opened his arteries and restored blood flow to his leg.
Zeman left the presidency a year ago after ten years. Not long after becoming head of state in August 2013, the doctors of the newly established council announced that Zeman was suffering from polyfunctional neuropathy, which is usually a neurological complication of diabetes. He was in the hospital several times as president, some of the shorter stays were described by the Castle as rehabilitation. He found himself in a very serious condition after the parliamentary elections in 2021. He then spent 48 days in the Central Military Hospital, initially in the intensive care unit. Doctors justified the need for care due to complications associated with the president’s chronic illness, which they did not specify. For almost three years, Zeman has been in a wheelchair due to problems with walking and stability.
