Zelensky in Davos: Europe likes to talk about the future, but does nothing –

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed disappointment at the lack of “political will” in the European Union for decisive action against Russian President Vladimir Putin. The hesitant approach of the EU, in his words, makes it difficult to respond effectively to Russian aggression and weakens the pressure on Moscow at a key moment for European security.

Zelensky stressed that in order to prevent another Russian invasion, Ukraine needs security guarantees from the United States, not just France and Great Britain. “Great Britain and France are ready to actually deploy their forces on the ground. However, President Trump’s support is needed, and again – without the participation of the United States, no security guarantees work,” he said in his speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos.

A year ago I ended my speech in Davos with these words: Europe must know how to defend itself. A year has passed – nothing has changed. Now everyone is looking at Greenland – no one knows what to do, everyone is waiting for America to calm down. What if he doesn’t calm down? There is so much talk about Iran. The protests were drowned in blood, but no one helped – European politicians were celebrating Christmas, the Ukrainian president said.

He then recalled how much talk there was about seizing Russian assets, but when it came down to it, no action was taken. A tribunal for Russian crimes has not yet been established. “Is it a lack of time or political will? Europe likes to talk about the future but does nothing”Zelensky said.

Europe believes in NATO, but no one has seen it in action. If Putin decides to invade Lithuania, who will respond? The US should – and what if they don’the asked.

According to him, Europe must figure out how to defend itself, and Ukraine can help with that. “We have weapons, we have experience. Russian ships can sink off Greenland, like off Crimea. We know how to fight them”the president said.

“If we watch people struggle for freedom and do nothing, the result is always tragic”he continued. And he recalled that in 2020 no one helped the Belarusians (when they protested the falsified elections – note ed.), and now (the Russian missile) “Oreshnik” from Belarus can reach most of the EU countries. “We have said many times: we have to act. But Europe, as usual: maybe one day someone will do something”states Zelenski.

According to him instead of taking the lead, Europe is hoping that the US president will change. EU leaders say we must be strong, but they are waiting for someone else to do it for them. Today, the US created a “Peace Council”, while Europe has not even developed a unified position, commented the Ukrainian president.

Europe can build a better world without wars, but to do so it must become strong. Ukraine is ready to help it become stronger. Today we need your strength to protect our independence. And you need the independence of Ukraine, because tomorrow you will have to defend your values. Actions are needed. World order is changed through action. Without action there will be no tomorrowconcluded Zelensky.
