Young Girl Who Went for Surgery at Ersoy Hospital Lost Her Life

19-year-old pharmacy student Heval Pekgöz, who wanted to have surgery for the flesh on her nose at Ersoy Hospital in Maltepe, Istanbul, lost her life, allegedly due to the hospital’s negligence. The Pekgöz family asked for help and demanded that those responsible for the incident be punished.

Heval Pekgöz, a 19-year-old pharmacy student at Istanbul Marmara University, allegedly wanted to have surgery after she started having difficulty breathing due to the flesh in her nose. Pekgöz, who was examined at Ersoy Hospital in Maltepe district because it was close to her home and decided to have surgery, was first referred to the same hospital’s center in Kurtköy district and then to a state hospital, where she lost her life. Pekgöz’s family filed a criminal complaint, claiming that the hospital was negligent. The legal battle between the hospital and the family continues.

The Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office requested camera recordings

Following the complaint, the Istanbul Anatolian Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office, Civil Servant Crimes Investigation Bureau launched an investigation. The prosecutor’s office obtained camera footage from the hospital. It also requested permission to investigate the doctors.

“They took us from hospital to hospital giving us false and incorrect information”

Father Ferhat Pekgöz, who described the process, said, “There was a problem with my daughter’s nasal flesh, she was snoring and had difficulty breathing. We made an appointment at a state hospital in July and decided that she needed surgery. Then, we got a surgery date for Saturday, August 10th at this hospital in Maltepe because it was close to our home. The necessary tests were done before the surgery and they said there was no problem. When the surgery day came, they took her into surgery at around 08.50 and told us that we had to wait. We had asked if there was an intensive care unit at the hospital beforehand and they said that everything was fine and that we should not worry. About 1 hour later, they called us to the chief physician’s office and said that her heart had stopped for 1 minute and that she was receiving heart massage but there was no problem. They wanted to refer us to their hospital in Kurtköy just as a precaution. When we went to that hospital, they took the patient to the intensive care unit and took us to be careful. They told us that our daughter had heart problems and that an angiogram needed to be done. We said that if necessary, it should be done, but they said they couldn’t do it and that they had opened a record for her at the state hospital and she would be referred. After the referral, the doctor said, there is no problem with your daughter’s heart, there is brain damage, they said she should be transferred to another hospital with intensive care. The first hospital told us that her heart stopped once, but they gave us false and incorrect information, her heart stopped several times. She lost all her abilities because her brain was deprived of oxygen for a long time. In this private hospital, they either examined her late, or they did not notice that her heart stopped, or they did not have the equipment. Because of their late and negligent attitude, my daughter lost her life on August 30,” he said.

“My child’s grave and the school are side by side”

Mother Özlem Pekgöz said, “I lost my daughter due to negligence. We were informed late and she was not referred to the hospitals we wanted. They said there was intensive care but it turned out there was no intensive care. I was told not to panic and they kept saying there was nothing wrong, we will discharge her. They kept asking if my daughter had a genetic heart condition but there was no such thing. When an angiogram was performed, it turned out there was no problem with her heart. Our child changed 3 hospitals in 2 hours. I talked to the doctor and they said everything was fine. We chose this hospital because it was close to our home. We took our child’s body out of the hospital we entered with joy. I want the authorities to be punished, I am complaining about all of them. My child’s grave is right next to the school, when schools open, while everyone is sending their children to school, I will go to my child’s grave.” – ISTANBUL
