Xanthi / Neither traffic lights nor bars at an unguarded crossing – Driver stops the train to check

One year after tragedy in Tempe with 57 dead, nothing seems to have changed unfortunately in the situation of the Greek railway. In fact, incidents continue to come to light that prove them appalling deficiencies in basic security infrastructure on the railway network.

The crossing as seen is unguarded, the safety bars are broken and the signage non-existent. According to train drivers, this is one of the many crossings in the region of Thrace that do not work.

“There hasn’t been a passenger train for several years. However, once in a while commercial trains pass it is quite dangerous. There is no marking, the traffic lights are also damaged, it’s not that they don’t work. This has the result that they pass undisturbed and one can forget at some point that they are passing by the railway line”, said the resident of the area, Anthi Kourtidou, speaking to MEGA.

“There have been accidents here, even fatal ones. And new kids have “left”. Is a point we have mourned victimswith a train carrying away children,” he noted.
