Since its arrival in bookstores, “El Buzón De Las Impuras” has become one of the favorite titles of national readers. Francisca Solar’s work reconstructs the story of the victims of the fire at the Church of the Company of Jesus in 1863, where more than two thousand people died, mostly women, and which gave rise to the Santiago Fire Department.
As part of its launch activities, the historical novel will stop at the Santiago Firefighters Museum, an institution that has kept the memory of the tragedy alive and where one of the bells from the damaged church is preserved and displayed.
In addition, the cultural center will raffle off a copy on its Instagram channel (@mubochile) 24 hours before the launch, which the winner will be able to pick up at the event.
“The Santiago Fire Department has kept this important piece of our history alive for 160 years, despite the indifference or ignorance of the public, and that is why I am so happy to collaborate with them in expanding their heritage work. Thanks to the success of the novel, interest in the tragedy of La Compañía has re-emerged with force and it gives us a new opportunity to educate about what happened, as well as to restore the dignity of the thousands of victims who lay in the most unjust oblivion,” says Francisca Solar.
For her part, the Executive Director of MuBo, María José Lira, adds that “as a museum of the Santiago Fire Department, this historical event, its visibility and contemporary debate, has a very significant value. In particular, opening up perspectives on history, which is often invisible, and supporting a wide variety of projects whose themes call us together, is a fundamental part of our mission to enhance and rescue heritage.”
The Santiago Firefighters Museum is located at Santo Domingo 978, a couple of blocks from the former National Congress, a building that stands where, in 1863, the Church of La Compañía was, a building that before its disaster had withstood three earthquakes and two fires.
As it is the last Saturday of the month, this Saturday, July 27, admission to MuBo will be free for the general public.
