Worrying outlook for child malnutrition in Colombia

The Ombudsman’s Office highlighted the relationship between food and access to drinking water, since the lack of water resources especially affects populated centers and dispersed rural areas, where the highest percentage of deaths and cases of malnutrition are evident, so “it is urgent that drinking water reaches areas such as the Amazon, the Caribbean and the Pacific”, regions particularly affected.

“The causes of this crisis are multiple and complex, such as extreme and multidimensional poverty, lack of access to basic health services, food insecurity and historical lack of protection, added to structural violence and neglect of the state of the communities “claimed the ombudsman in charge.

In addition to the data on malnutrition in early childhood, the report reveals that in 2023 more than 15 million people in Colombia were unable to obtain nutrients and proteins found in vegetables, fruits, meats and dairy products on a daily basis.
