World’s tallest woman (77) has died

The tallest woman in the world has died in Brazil. Maria Feliciana dos Santos was almost 2 meters and 24 centimeters tall, the woman died on Saturday of pneumonia in hospital at the age of 77.

Maria Feliciana dos Santos broke the world record for the tallest woman in the world in her young years: when she was just 20 years old, the ruler measured almost 2 meters and 24 centimeters. “Everything seemed normal until she was ten,” a relative says of the woman. “Then suddenly she shot up. But what do you want, with a father of 2 meters 30 centimeters and a grandfather of 2 meters 26 centimeters.”

Santos was a celebrity in Brazil, appearing as an attraction in circuses and event halls. In a TV program she was named Reinha da Altura, or ‘height queen’. She also played basketball and built a career as a singer.

The woman died on Saturday at a private hospital in Aracaju, on Brazil’s northeastern coast. In her hometown, a 28-story building was named after her, and she was given a statue in 2022. In recent years, Santos has struggled with health problems and was confined to a wheelchair.

The world’s tallest woman is now Turkey’s Rumeysa Gelgi. She measures 2.15 meters.
