World: Pope Francis on Wednesday Drugs He railed against the legalisation of narcotics and labelled drug traffickers “murderers”, while also calling for help and support for drug addicts. “Liberalising drug use does not reduce drug addiction – that is an illusion – as has been proposed, or has already been implemented, in some countries,” Francis told the crowd in St Peter’s Square at his weekly audience.
“At the same time, we must remember that each addict has a unique personal story and must be listened to, understood, loved and, as far as possible, healed and purified,” he said on the day designated by the United Nations as World Anti-Drug Day. Francis, 87, made no distinction between so-called soft drugs such as marijuana, which has been legalized for recreational use in several countries and some U.S. states, and “hard” drugs such as heroin and cocaine. “We cannot ignore the evil intentions and actions of drug dealers and traffickers. They are killers,” the pope said. Argentina Francis, who is from the US, also denounced the “devastating impact” of drug production on the environment, saying that in Latin America “this impact is becoming increasingly evident, for example in the Amazon basin”.
