World No Tobacco Day – 2024-06-07 08:28:52

The World Health Organization’s digital health assistant will help young people avoid the harmful influence of the tobacco industry.

The theme of World No Tobacco Day this year is protecting young people and children from the effects of the tobacco industry. The aim of the initiative is to help young people around the world to demand that governments protect them from manipulative marketing. Information on the topic is also provided by the WHO’s digital health assistant – Sara, which is based on generative artificial intelligence:

“Tobacco companies use aggressive marketing tactics to promote their products. They target vulnerable segments of the population and influence policies. Tobacco use increases the risk of cardiovascular disease, cancer, as well as respiratory disease. Secondhand exposure to tobacco smoke is harmful, especially to children”.

About $8 billion is spent each year by the tobacco and nicotine industry on various types of advertising, according to WHO data. The industry is trying to hook young people into life-long income, the organization said in a report released last week. Children smoke e-cigarettes more than adults in all regions of the world, and globally an estimated 37 million children between the ages of 13 and 15 use tobacco.
