Indeed, US military, political, and strategic assistance to Ukraine is vital to Kyiv while the conflict continues. For the Biden administration, aid to Ukraine is a key principle on which his party’s politics rests; it is a vital path to rebuilding transatlantic solidarity; and it is now becoming an election issue ahead of the November 2024 presidential elections. However, other geopolitical developments, including the Gaza conflict and growing competition with China in the Indo-Pacific, combined with Republicans’ growing fatigue with US involvement in wars and the prospect of a Donald Trump victory in the upcoming presidential elections, are changing the trajectory of US support to Ukraine. This brief outlines the economic, political, and strategic factors motivating US support to Ukraine.
