World Bank: Libya’s losses due to floods are estimated at $1.65 billion

The World Bank estimated the damage and losses in the areas affected by the floods that struck Libyan cities at about (1.65) billion US dollars, while it estimated the reconstruction needs at about (1.8) billion US dollars during the first three years.

The Ministry of Finance stated that the bank prepared its report at the request of the Libyan Ministry of Finance, and for this purpose sought the help of a number of international development partners and in coordination with the Libyan government emergency and rapid response team.

According to the Ministry, this report and the detailed data it contains will be of great benefit in setting reconstruction plans for the affected areas on sound foundations, if its content is fully utilized.

The Ministry confirmed that among the priorities, which it focused on when requesting assistance from the World Bank to prepare this report, was working to prepare an assessment of the damages and needs through which a clear vision could be reached regarding the extent of the damage and losses and the cost of reconstruction.

The World Bank report came after work that lasted for about four months, and on January 24, it issued a report entitled “Rapid Assessment of Damages and Needs Resulting from the Storm and Floods in Libya for the Year 2023,” including an assessment of the impact of the floods on infrastructure and the provision of services to citizens in the affected cities, and a preliminary estimate. For short and medium term reconstruction needs.

The report covered 20 cities and villages, but it focused on five main cities: (Derna – Sousse – Al-Bayda – Al-Marj – Shahat). As for the sectors that the report evaluated, the most important of them were (Education – Health – Housing – Water and Sanitation – Transport and Communication). – Financial energy – Agriculture and irrigation – Environment – ​​Social protection – Antiquities and cultural heritage).
