Sheep farmer and foreman Bart Kemp found thirteen dead and two injured sheep in one of his pastures near Otterlo this morning. Kemp speaks of “a battlefield”. He assumes the culprit is a wolf.
It’s the fourth time in a short time that Kemp has found dead sheep on his land. “At this rate, professional sheep farming will no longer exist in five years,” says Kemp from Omroep Gelderland. “This is getting out of hand.”
Kemp, known for his work as Agractie’s foreman, received a phone call from his neighbor early this morning telling him something was wrong. On the way to his pasture he called a veterinarian and the wolf experts from BIJ12.
Hole under the electric fence
On his land the farmer found the flock of 42 sheep, thirteen of which did not survive the attack and two were seriously injured. At the edge of his pasture, the farmer saw a clear sign of digging that passed under an electric fence. “And after that dig the violence against my sheep started,” Kemp said.
A BIJ12 expert then approached Otterlo directly. “We are taking DNA samples and analyzing the bite wounds to see if it was indeed a wolf,” a spokesperson for the organization said. “We prefer to do it right away, even on the weekend, because then the slopes are fresh.”
Prospect
If it is indeed a wolf attack, it would be the fourth time in Kemp since Nov. 7. He lost at least 25 sheep in total. Like any farmer who suffers a wolf attack, Kemp receives compensation for the death of his sheep.
He now calls that compensation “irrelevant.” Above all, he wants the government to offer prospects for the future of sheep farming in the Netherlands.
