With chatbot it will be possible to verify information about the 2024 elections

Within the framework of the “INE 2024 Certainty” initiative, which aims to combat misinformation on social networks during electoral processes, the National Electoral Institute (INE) will use for the first time its virtual assistant on WhatsApp, “Inés”, to that citizens can report possible false or inaccurate news about the 2024 elections, in addition to receiving verified information regarding the electoral process.

With this new option integrated into the INE chatbot on WhatsApp (+52 55 5809 7300), citizens will be able to send information in text, audio, video and image format that they consider false or misleading, and request confirmation, which will initially be by Agence France-Press (AFP) Factual, although more media outlets that make up the International Fact Verification Network (IFCN) may be incorporated. These organizations will be able to collaborate through a smart platform developed by non-profit technology company Meedan on WhatsAppwhich will concentrate citizen queries to be categorized, analyzed and verified.

This effort is part of the “INE 2024 Certainty” initiative, a multidisciplinary INE project, which aims to combat electoral misinformation, which in this new stage incorporates the collaboration of media outlets specialized in data verification. Thanks to their independence and journalistic experience, these media will become reliable sources of information. Through this new direct communication strategy with citizens, it will be possible to consult and obtain verified information on possible false or inaccurate news regarding the 2024 elections. It is important to note that, in order to preserve the guiding principles of the INE, it will not be a tool to obtain verified information about candidacies, political parties and their electoral campaigns.

Choose the option “INE 2024 Certainty” from the menu and start sending your questions about the electoral information that is circulating in social networks.

“Inés”, the INE chatbot that accompanies you in each election “Inés” was created for the 2021 elections in Mexico thanks to an agreement between the INE and WhatsApp, with the objective of providing information and guidance to citizens on issues related to the electoral process. Its main function has been to provide automatic responses to frequent queries about how to vote, where to locate your polling station, voting requirements, among other aspects relevant to voters.

The chatbot offers a direct and accessible communication channel for citizens, incorporating artificial intelligence to understand and respond to user queries in a timely manner. Its implementation represents a significant advance in the digitalization and modernization of electoral processes in Mexico and, since then, reaffirms a commitment to transparency and certainty as principles that must prevail in each election.
