For the regional elections on October 29, members of the Arhuaco community in the department of Cesar will have the opportunity to exercise their right to vote with differential electoral cards in the Iku language, this as a contribution to inclusion in the democratic system of the country.
Tirso José Cabello Gutiérrez, Delegate of the National Registrar of Civil Status, said that Cesar will be a pioneer in this initiative. “It is the first time that the Electoral Organization, in addition to San Andrés, where we have already done so by constitutional mandate, have electoral cards in the Iku language, of the Arhuaco people.”
The Arhuaco indigenous community met the conditions to facilitate the preparation of differential cards in their language. There was an interpreter recognized by the community, with whom the texts of the bilingual electoral cards for this community could be prepared, whose contents will be in the language of the Ikʉ people (Arhuaco) and in Spanish.
With other ethnic groups it was not possible to complete the process, since there are no literate interpreters who are experts in the subject of calligraphy and the identification of the symbols and letters of other indigenous languages, such as Yukpa, Wiwa, Kogui, Kankuamo and Chimila.
In this way, the Arhuaco indigenous people of Cesar will receive bilingual electoral cards for this election, to have a vote in the election of the Governor, Departmental Assembly, Mayor, Municipal Council and Local Administrative Boards.
