Thunderstorms in Santa Catarina cause damage. The windstorm partially destroyed the buildings of the City Council and Town Hall in the city of Ibirama, Santa Catarina last night | DISCLOSURE
Santa Catarina is expected to face new isolated thunderstorms between the afternoon and evening of this Tuesday, warns MetSul Meteorology. Yesterday the intense heat, which reached 40ºC in several cities of Santa Catarina, favored the formation of clouds with great vertical development with thunderstorms in the east of Santa Catarina, which caused damage.
The municipality most affected by tonight’s storms in the east of Santa Catarina was Ibirama, in the Itajaí valley, where a windstorm caused the roofs of houses and public buildings to collapse. The wind tore off the roofs and caused the partial collapse of the structure of both the Municipality and Town Hall buildings.
The strong area of instability that crossed Florianópolis with rain and lightning also reached the cities of the north coast of Santa Catarina. Itajaí recorded a thunderstorm that caused a lack of electricity in much of the city, with more than 50 thousand consumer units without electricity. The wind also blew out the windows of the apartments, frightening the residents.
In Balneário Camboriú the storm arrived with very intense rain which ended up causing flooding in several parts of the city. Motorists had difficulty traveling on some roads due to the amount of water accumulated on the roads.
With the very intense heat, very heavy clouds formed over the east of Santa Catarina early in the night. In the afternoon, the temperature at Epagri station had reached 39.9ºC in Gravatal; 39.0ºC in Criciúma; 38.6ºC at Indaial; 38.5ºC in Urussanga; and 38.0ºC in Tubarão. In several other cities temperatures between 35ºC and 37ºC were recorded.
Today, although without extreme maximum temperatures like yesterday, will be another hot day in Santa Catarina with highs around or above 35ºC in several cities. Since the atmosphere remains warm and humid, the heat tends to once again form clouds with greater vertical development with isolated heavy to torrential rain and localized thunderstorms with the risk of storms.
The greatest risk continues to be in the eastern cities of the state, but areas of the Midwest and West could also be affected by strong localized instability. These summer storms are essentially isolated, temporary, and often very strong. It is not possible to predict exactly where they will occur hours in advance, as they often affect, for example, only certain neighborhoods of a city.
