In October 2001 Microsoft presented the first version of Windows XP. The goal is to unite its families of operating systems (consumer and professional) into a single family, with the aim of reducing development and maintenance costs. Basically Windows 2000 was supposed to fulfill this role, but the complexity of its administration interface explains its rejection by the general public.
Similarly, in 1999, the Microsoft Neptune project that was supposed to provide the home version of Windows 2000 was abandoned. It was replaced by the Whistler project, which incorporated many ideas from the Neptune and Odyssey projects, which gave birth to Windows XP and its two versions: public and professional. Both versions use the NT kernel and architecture (known as version 5.1). The consumer version is therefore the same as the professional one, but is stripped of all the functions considered superfluous for home use.
