Russia – Russian Sports Minister Oleg Matytsyn stated that the decision for Russia’s participation in the Olympic Games scheduled for Paris this summer will be taken by the athletes themselves, stressing that the games should not be boycotted.
Matitsyn said in statements to the “match tv” website: “Sports should be free of discrimination. We have been under unprecedented pressure from international sport for two years now. The Olympic Games should not be boycotted outright and athletes who have qualified should not be forced not to participate. But there is no need to cross the border and sign documents that contradict the laws of the Russian Federation. “We will prepare recommendations in the near future, but the decision to participate will be made by the athletes themselves.”
The Russian minister continued: “The Olympic Games this year are not the main beginning for us. “The main games are BRICS games, friendship games, etc.”
The Olympic Games will be held in Paris from July 26 to August 11 next.
The International Olympic Committee excluded Russian athletes from participating in competitions following the Russian military operation in Ukraine in February 2022, but in December 2023, it agreed to accept the Russians and Belarusians into the Olympic Games as neutral individual athletes.
The International Olympic Committee announced last Tuesday that Russian and Belarusian athletes, who will be able to compete in the Paris 2024 Olympics in a neutral situation, will not participate in the opening ceremony of the games.
Athletes from Russia and Belarus at the Paris Olympics will not be allowed to display anything symbolizing their nationality, from symbols to chants, if they win a gold medal.
