Thursday is the 673rd day of the Russian invasion. Given the lack of clear successes on the front and increasingly uncertain assistance from Western Europe and the United States, the Joe Biden administration’s goal is no longer to achieve a complete victory for Ukraine. Currently, according to Politico, Washington is focusing on improving Kiev’s negotiating position ahead of future peace talks with Russia. According to the portal’s sources, to renounce “total victory” it would be necessary to cede part of the occupied territory of Ukraine to Russia. However, the White House assures that its objectives towards Ukraine have not changed. Follow the live broadcast of Wirtualna Polska.

Warning: Kremlin propaganda
In an interview with the Tass agency, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov was asked about the likelihood of Kiev deciding to negotiate with Moscow.
– We are forced to note the lack of desire for peace on the part of the Zelenskyj regime. His representatives think in terms of war and use very aggressive rhetoric. This is not a cessation of hostilities. The ban on negotiations with Russian leaders, introduced by Zelensky on September 30, 2022, is still in force, Sergei Lavrov responded.

More reports of Russian war crimes.
“Ukrainian drone footage released on December 27 showed another Russian execution of Ukrainian prisoners of war near the town of Robotyne in the western Zaporizhia oblast,” the US Institute for the Study of War says.
“The video shows how Russian soldiers shoot three Ukrainian soldiers, which Russian forces captured in the treeline west of the town of Verbove (east of Robotyne). Another video shows a Russian soldier firing again at close range at an already dead Ukrainian soldier,” the ISW describes.
The Prosecutor General’s Office of Ukraine announced that it had opened an investigation “into violations of the laws and customs of war by Russian forces and premeditated murder.” Investigators said the incident occurred on an unspecified date in December 2023.
“The killing of prisoners of war violates Article III of the Geneva Convention on the Law of Armed Conflict,” recalls the ISW.

Estonia has trained over 1,300 Ukrainian soldiers since the start of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022which corresponds to about a sixth of the Estonian Defense Forces (EDF) conscripts trained in the same period, Roland Murof, spokesman for the Estonian Ministry of Defense, said on Wednesday.
The training focused on “basic skills, artillery combat and cyberspace operations,” a representative of the Estonian Ministry of Defense explained.
Several units and their instructors are involved in training the Ukrainians, Captain Taavi Laasik said, adding that this will be taken into account when planning the training of EDF units. “This requires further actions and efforts, and the help to the Ukrainians did not directly affect the training potential of the Estonian army,” the spokesperson stressed.
He said the EDF also benefits from training Ukrainian soldiers.

The White House had previously announced that this year’s latest package would completely exhaust the funds available to replenish American warehouses and had suggested that without the adoption of new funds by Congress, it would not be possible to transfer weapons to Ukraine.
“It is imperative that Congress acts quickly, as quickly as possible, in the interests of our national security, helping Ukraine defend itself and secure its future,” Anthony Blinken said.
Congress is currently on a Christmas break, which ends on January 8. Negotiations on the new package – or rather on immigration reforms, which are the condition for Republicans to accept additional funds for Ukraine, must last throughout the recess. Leaders of both parties in the Senate expressed hope that a deal would be ready as soon as the House reconvenes in Washington.

Oleksandr Kamyshyn, Minister of Strategic Industries of Ukraine, announced the start of proof tests of domestically produced 155 caliber projectiles. Their series production is expected to begin next year.
– Ukraine has started working on 155 caliber projectiles. We already have prototypes that we are testing. We plan to start mass production next year, Kamyszyn said.
However, the whole process depends on partners, especially powder suppliers compliant with NATO standards. However, they are not produced in Ukraine.
– We learned some elements. But unfortunately we are dependent of this caliber on supplies of the rare gunpowder, which Ukraine has never produced, the minister added.
