TEL AVIV – Kamikaze drone attacks Houthi in Tel Aviv, Israel, from a distance of 2,000 km on July 19 marked a new phase in Middle East tensions.

The incident underscores how Yemen’s Houthi group has emerged as a significant threat in the Red Sea region, breaching Israeli security lines after firing hundreds of missiles and drones.

The Houthi attacks also reinforce the group’s role as another key actor in the clashes between Israel and Iran-aligned factions, and raise the risk of further attacks.

Following the incident, a Houthi spokesman said, “We are ready to face Israel’s reaction to Yemen.”

The Houthis’ expectations were borne out when Israeli fighter jets, including F-35 stealth jets, bombed the Red Sea port city of Hodeidah on July 20, targeting Yemen’s civilian infrastructure.

A total of 6 people died, 87 others were injured, and a large fire broke out that was still visible burning the next day.

As Hodeidah port is a vital entry point for much of Yemen’s goods, experts warn that the attack, and further attacks, could hamper aid to Yemen’s population, which is already heavily dependent on international assistance after years of war.

“These targeted attacks are doing more harm to the average Yemeni citizen than the Houthis’ ability to launch attacks across the Red Sea or Israel,” said Adam Clements, a retired U.S. Army attaché to Yemen.

From Israel’s perspective, the Houthi attack on Tel Aviv, which killed one person and wounded several others, further exposed gaps in its security, as Houthi kamikaze drones evaded its radar systems.
