During a court proceeding, the former president confessed to having terminal cancer, at which point he broke down in tears during a virtual hearing. “I have terminal cancer, I was thinking of anything except ending up prosecuted for things I didn’t do,” he declared on that occasion.

Throughout his battle against the disease, Hernández has undergone five surgeries related to colon cancer, in addition to the recent intervention to treat liver cancer. In a video shared on his social networks, Hernández has also linked his personal struggle with his fight against corruption: “I have two cancers, one physical and the cancer of corruption, of the machinery that politicians have established (against me) so as not to let themselves be attacked.”

The former mayor’s legal situation adds another layer of complexity to his life. Hernández was recently sentenced to 64 months of house arrest for irregularities in a waste management contract in Bucaramanga, a verdict that has further accentuated his unfortunate situation.
