The prosecuting body said in a statement that thanks to the evidence presented, a criminal judge in Medellín (Antioquia) “sentenced vallenato music singer Nelson Aníbal Velásquez Díaz to four years in prison, for the crime of violation of the copyright and related rights.”

According to the investigation, the son of the minstrel Aníbal Velásquez Hurtado performed between 2012 and 2018, as a soloist and without the proper authorization, songs from a musical group of which he was a part for several years, ‘The Restless Ones of Vallenato’.
In this sense, the first instance ruling, that is, the one that can be appealed, also imposed on Velásquez Díaz a fine equivalent to 26 legal minimum wages current monthly, a little more than 20 million pesos (about 5,200 dollars today).
