This is not a preconceived idea, women are in fact more cautious than men, due to various factors.
When the mercury drops, women tend to dress in layers before going out, while men can easily do without gloves and scarves. And for good reason, they are more resistant to the cold.
Several studies have shown that for men the ideal temperature, or thermal comfort, is around 22°C, while for women it is around 25°C. This difference is explained primarily by a hormonal factor.
In fact, cold receptor molecules are regulated by testosterone. More precisely, this male hormone inhibits the TRPM8 channel protein and stops the feeling of cold. This is why men are less cautious than women.
metabolism, muscle mass…
Basal metabolic rate also plays a role. It corresponds to the energy we spend daily at rest to ensure vital functions, including maintaining body temperature. The higher it is, the less sensitive we are to low temperatures.
However, men have a higher basal metabolism (6 to 12% higher than that of women), knowing that this data is purely genetic.
Our ability to resist the cold also depends on muscle mass. When it is cold, the body tries to warm itself through the appearance of shivers, caused by muscle contraction. Therefore, heat production is greater in people with high muscle mass.
And we know that men have more muscle mass. On average it makes up 38% of a man’s total mass, compared to 25% in women.
