At least half a million seafarers will now have to be retrained in new techniques if “green” shipping becomes the norm, as stated at the 16th Greener Shipping Summit last week at Posidonia 2024. Conference keynote speaker and Intercargo president Dimitris Fafalios, warned that “we cannot achieve the IMO targets without safety” and added that “to develop the right regulations for decarbonisation and safety we need to help those who legislate regulations and arrangements to understand the fundamental difference between the basic models of shipping”. “Seafarers will understand the new procedures” said Giorgos Skevis, General manager of CLEOS, but Angelos Pantouvakis, dean at the School of Maritime and Industry, wondered: “Who will train the trainers?”.
