GAZA STRIP – The World Health Organization (WHO) said today (12/9/2024) it has evacuated 97 people including dozens of children from Gaza to the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The WHO called for routine medical transfers from the enclave to be allowed to resume, Reuters reported.

“This is the largest evacuation from Gaza since October 2023,” Richard Peeperkorn, WHO Representative to the occupied Palestinian territories told reporters, referring to the operation that took place overnight.

“Gaza needs medical corridors. We need a more organized and sustainable system,” he said, adding that more than 10,000 Gazans were awaiting relocation.

“WHO, in collaboration with @mofauae and partners, today evacuated 97 critically ill and injured patients and 155 companions from #Gaza in the largest medical evacuation since October 2023,” the WHO tweeted.

Patients included 45 children and 52 adults with a variety of diseases, including cancer, cardiovascular disease, congenital abnormalities, blood and liver diseases, and trauma/injury.

“A special mission to the north was carried out to ensure that eight patients and 12 companions were transferred from Gaza City to the European Hospital in Gaza in time for evacuation,” WHO said.

It was emphasized, “Ultimately, the best treatment for all patients is a ceasefire.”
