This Wednesday, the airline Aeroméxico notified its passengers that trips to eight destinations may be affected due to Tropical Storm Alberto.
The cyclone that formed in the Gulf of Mexico and is moving towards the west-southwest of Mexico, caused the first rains this Wednesday afternoon in the state of Nuevo León, in the north of the country.
State Civil Protection reported at 4:00 p.m. (22:00 GMT) that the meteorological phenomenon has caused rainfall ranging from light to moderate in 29 municipalities of the 51 that make up the state.
In the case of trips to, from or through Monterrey, Matamoros (Tamaulipas), Reynosa, Tampico, Austin, McAllen, Houston and San Antonio, the affected dates will be today, Wednesday, June 19 and tomorrow, June 20.
Users will have until June 22 for ticket reissuance and as the deadline to make a new flight.
Alert in Monterrey
Due to the rainfall, some preventive road closures were ordered in different parts of the metropolitan area of the city of Monterrey, the state capital, in addition to the state government announcing a series of measures.
“We have to measure the worst scenarios: floods,” said the president of Nuevo León, Samuel García. He added that due to the heavy rainfall expected, the drinking water system could collapse Thursday and Friday.
“Because of so much water, the system can collapse, so we have to have drinking water at home for Thursday and Friday,” said García and called on the population to store the vital liquid to face possible cuts in the water supply.
For his part, the head of Water and Drainage of Monterrey, Juan Ignacio Barragán, explained that failures in the electrical supply would cause difficulties for pumping and that would cause cuts in the water service.
“The pumping to the tanks affects us and depending on how long the failures are, the problem depends. If we have a failure of 10, 12 or 24 hours, then the tanks remain empty and it takes time to recover them,” he shared.
Alberto’s impact on land
According to the National Meteorological Service (SMN) of Mexico, Tropical Storm Alberto continues its movement towards the coasts of Veracruz and Tamaulipas and is expected to impact during this night and early Thursday morning on the border limits of these entities.
“The wide circulation of said system is expected to generate intense to torrential rains (150 to 250 mm) in the state of Nuevo León and the north of Tamaulipas,” the SMN stated.
