Women’s football in Rugombo is not growing due to material and financial challenges. In addition, the sharing of funding is not applied fairly for male and female footballers. As a result, girls feel discouraged and are at risk of dropping out.

Citegetse says male and female footballers are not treated equally, whether in terms of financial or material resources. As a result, girls feel discouraged.

The competent authority is invited to review the current regulations on financing so that footballers and footballers are treated fairly. This wish was expressed on Monday, August 19, 2024 by Mrs. Jeanne-Marie Citégetse, legal representative of the women’s football association of the commune of Rugombo, in the province of Cibitoke during a meeting with reporters from the Burundi Eco newspaper.

“We are facing serious problems related to the lack of financial and material resources. When we try to complain about these inequalities, we are told that it is because of the regulations in force. We suggest that those concerned review the said regulations.”

Genesis of Rugombo Women’s FootballThe idea of creating a women’s football team came in 2017. “After realizing that the province of Cibitoke had not been represented in women’s football competitions, I decided to look for girls to sensitize them to the importance of women’s participation in football and its benefits. However, I quickly noticed that they were not interested. I finally looked and found a coach who understood my approach, and thanks to him, I managed to attract girls interested in football,” said Mr. Citegetse.

What about the interest in women’s football?

Women’s football is beneficial. “It’s great to watch women’s football matches because even though not all the players are at the same level yet, there is a unique playing atmosphere that attracts many spectators. In addition, it helps reduce the risk of negative behavior among young people,” she said.

Beyond football, female footballers benefit from information about women’s development, their future and that of the progress of the commune. “We highlight examples like Francine Niyonsaba, who was rewarded for her sporting performances. We also try to

show that it is time to work towards achieving independence, so as not to constantly depend on financial help from their parents,” she explains.

There is no shortage of challenges

Citegetse says male and female footballers are not treated equally, whether in terms of financial resources or equipment. As a result, girls feel discouraged. “Female footballers do not enjoy the same rights or benefits as male footballers. Yet they should have the same opportunities.”

He added: “To obtain the outfits, we ask for assistance, but in vain. In this case, we have to rent them while using our own means, which hinders the development of women’s football in Rugombo.”

The Rugombo women’s football chairperson says parents are reluctant to send their daughters to participate, fearing that coaches or others might sexually exploit them. In addition, travel costs for training are also another challenge.

Despite all these difficulties, Mrs. Citegetse encourages and challenges the girls of the Rugombo commune to join the women’s football association.
